EVERGREEN YARD DECOR HOW-TO

I am self admittedly the world’s WORST gardener. Every Spring, I have wonderful hopes for beautiful flowers in my planters, I purchase said flowers from the nursery, plant them, water them and they die.

In our backyard we have 5 large planters on our back fence where we build a retaining wall for some flooding issues we were having. After 2 years of desimating anything that I put in there, I decided to pull it all this Fall and brainstorm other uses for the planters.

I saw a tutorial on Pinterest that sparked an idea! We live in Colorado, so evergreen trees are pretty normal to see in yards. So what if I could build some evergreen trees that were guaranteed to not die? BINGO!

Here’s a video of how I built my evergreen trees using tomato cages, garland, zip ties and solar twinkle lights!

What you will need:

  • Tomato Cage (1 for each tree, I used 3)

  • 10-15 zip ties

  • Garland - The length of garland needed will be determined by the height of the tomato cages. For a 36” tomato cage, I used approximately 36’ of garland.

  • Solar Twinkle Lights

The first thing you will need to do is zip tie the top of the tomato cage. This will create the tree form. With the garland, start at the bottom of the tomato cage, Use zip ties to secure the garland to the bottom ring of the tomato cage. Begin wrapping the garland around the cage, fluffing as you go. Continue to secure the garland with zip ties as you work your way to the top. If there is excess garland once you reach the top, use wire cutters to trim.

Now that the garland is secured, begin wrapping the twinkle lights around the tree making sure that the solar panel and panel stake is at the bottom of the tree.

Decide where you’d like to place the tree. I recommend using some garden stakes to secure the tree to the planter or the ground. Secure the solar panel in the ground where it will get the most direct sunlight.
