MY FORMER LIFE AS A TEACHER
I realized the other day that I have now been out of the classroom, almost as long as I was inside the classroom. Teaching is definitely one of those professions that you don’t stop being. A doctor doesn’t stop thinking like a doctor and seeing the world through the lens of a doctor just because they retired. Teaching is very much the same, I find myself looking through that lens multiple times a day. Now that we are homeschooling, it’s sort of reignited that love for teaching.
This was my portable classroom, which was one of my very favorite classrooms. I primarily taught 3rd-5th grade English, Language Arts and Reading. The last few years that I was in the classroom, I transitioned to a Gifted and Talented Specialist position, where I ran a pull out program for K-5 at several different elementary schools.
When I got pregnant with Jack, I decided to transition out of the classroom and put my Curriculum and Instruction Masters Degree to use by doing freelance curriculum development. I loved being in the classroom, but I REALLY love developing fun and engaging curriculum. There’s a big difference in using curriculum that was created by a teacher who has been IN THE TRENCHES of the classroom versus a corporation who hires English Majors to develop textbooks.
The last few years my focus has been on building this blog, but now that we are homeschooling it has really given me that resource development itch! I’ve been able to go back through my arsenal and start creating again. I plan to share alot of these here, but you can also find all of my resources on my TeachersPayTeachers site.
I wanted to start sharing more ideas and resources that can be used in a homeschool or classroom setting. So next week, I’ll be starting a new series calling Teaching Tuesday! Here’s a preview of what that will look like 😃
We’ve been working with Korben on learning the letters in his name. This is a great activity to do with letters, numbers, shapes, etc. I love using these mini sketch pads. I originally got them for a road trip. Since they come 4 to a pack, each boy has one in the car and one in the house. They are also small enough to throw in my purse when we are going to a restaurant or appointment.
