TEACHING TUESDAY [06.20.23]
Welcome to Teaching Tuesday! If you are new here, I’m a former teacher, have a master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction and am now a homeschool mom. You can read more about that journey here.
Every Tuesday I’m going to share an at home learning idea for preschool and elementary age kids, new curriculum resources and a freebie or two!
Art is always fun to incorporate into a unit of study for school. Earlier in the Spring, Jack did a Science unit on volcanoes. Throughout the unit, he had to create volcanoes using different mediums. For example, he created an erupting snow volcano, a Lego model of a volcano and a mosaic volcano.
He watched a quick video about the history of a mosaic and how it is created. He decided which colors would be appropriate for the different parts of the volcano and chose the construction paper he would use to make the mosaic pieces. Then he used his science journal where we keep all of his worksheets/activities and recreated and labeled an active volcano.
You could easily do this same type of project with kids as young as 3 by taking a black line print out of an animal, fish, or icon. Precut the mosaic pieces and let the child glue them on top of the black line image.
For older kids, they could create a coral reef, a rainforest, an exhibit at the zoo, an aquarium, etc. The possibilities are absolutely endless!
