TEACHING TUESDAY [08.15.23]
Welcome to Teaching Tuesday! If you are new here, I’m a former teacher, have a master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction and am now a homeschool mom. You can read more about that journey here.
Every Tuesday I’m going to share an at home learning idea for preschool and elementary age kids, new curriculum resources and a freebie or two!
It makes sense that exposure to the alphabet aids in helping children learn to read at an earlier age, but it’s more than just singing the ABC’s. Children need multiple, varied exposures to the alphabet daily to recognize letters and their sounds fluently.
Here’s some ideas for different ways to expose preschoolers to the alphabet:
Magnetic Letters - You can use these on the refrigerator, table or even a magnetic white board. As the child becomes more proficient, write a CVC word on the white board and have the child mimic the letters.
Busy Books - We love to take busy books with us when we go to a restaurant or appointments! It’s a great way to keep kids busy and engaged without using electronics. We recently got this busy book and Korben LOVES using the dry erase markers to trace letters. It also has velcro pieces that are great for matching.
Dab-A-Letter - Use bingo dabbers to “trace” letters OR grab a free dabber printable on Pinterest.
Alphabet Robots - We were gifted these when Jack was in preschool and it was such a great way to engage with him, especially because he had ZERO interest in learning the alphabet. With the robots, we had him tell us the letter before he could transform it into a robot and it clicked!
Stickers - I’ve shared this before, but I keep a spiral notebook in my office with a stack of stickers. I write a letter the size of the paper and Korben loves to trace it with stickers.
