TEACHING TUESDAY [10.24.23]
Welcome to Teaching Tuesday! If you are new here, I’m a former teacher, have a master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction and am now a homeschool mom. You can read more about that journey here.
Every Tuesday I’m going to share an at home learning idea for preschool and elementary age kids, new curriculum resources and a freebie or two!
Let’s talk about pretend play! Believe it or not this is a VITAL learning process that is often lost. Pretend play used to be an essential aspect of a Kindergarten classroom, but over the years as standards became more data driven, this skill has been brushed to the side.
Here are just a few benefits of pretend play for children:
independent thinking
negotiation skills
consideration of other point of views
multiple step scenarios
operate in a specific role
problem solving
abstract thinking
communication of wants and needs to peers
fine motor skills
physical imagination (ex: being an airplane)
These are just a few ways that pretend play is not only beneficial but essential to your child’s development. One of my favorite ways to see my boys do pretend play is through dressing up. We often think of “playing dress up” as a girl game, but my boys LOVE it. They are superheros, explorers, paleontologists, astronauts, teachers, etc. The list goes on and on. I truly never know what kind of costume I will find them dressed up in when I open their doors!
Pro Tip: Hit up Walmart and Target the day after Halloween. The Halloween costumes are usually marked down at least 50%, sometimes 75%. I like to grab a few and wrap them up for Christmas for each of the boys.
You can purchase the units above through my Teachers Pay Teachers store by clicking the photos.
These 4 units are also available in my VIP PASS (OCTOBER 2023), a low cost monthly subscription for new curriculum resources (or save 25% on a yearly subscription with code VIP25). Once you are a member you have access to all previous VIP PASS curriculum downloads as well, forever!
